美国作家安布罗斯·比尔斯生于俄亥俄州。参加过美国南北战争。之后在加利福尼亚和伦敦(1872～1875)当新闻记者。以短篇小说闻名。其小说以恐怖和死亡为题材，讽刺辛辣，语言精炼。1913年前往墨西哥。据传死于墨西哥内战中。主要作品有短篇小说集《在人生中间》(1891)、《这种事情可能吗？》(1893)和《魔鬼词典》(1906)等
